About
Approach
People

1. ANTHRA aims to work for sustainable livestock production within the larger framework of building people's food sovereignty and livelihood security. We actively protect, strengthen and work towards keeping indigenous knowledge and the diversity of cultures alive. The focus is on farming and production systems, crops and fodder varieties, livestock and plant genetic resources, medicinal plants and health care traditions, and land and water use.

2. ANTHRA works mainly with marginalized communities--Dalits, adivasis, pastoralists, landless groups, small and marginal farmers, and, especially, women from these communities. We actively support and promote viable and sustainable community-based, livelihood-enriching alternatives for these communities. Presently, Anthra works with such communities in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

3. ANTHRA supports viable, community-based livelihood-enriching interventions rather than mainstream, dominant development paradigms. We counter and question policies and programmes, which harm or displace the poor from their livelihoods and violate their basic human rights.

4. ANTHRA utilizes professional knowledge to

a) initiate debate among fellow professionals, animal scientists and development agencies in order to better understand and conceptualize ideas such as ecological sustainability

b) facilitate greater interaction and integration across disciplines like animal science, ecology, agriculture, anthropology and economics.
