Dalits comprise 25-30% of population in an average Indian village. Historically Dalits used to own a lot of livestock, but over the years, have systematically been alienated from their livestock assets, which is very closely linked to the alienation from land and other resources-, both private and common. Recent analysis shows how Dalits have extremely limited livestock ownership, challenging the well entrenched notions of livestock being more equitably distributed than land. Dalits have vast knowledge on different aspects of livestock rearing , and the absence of livestock in today’s context, severely cripples their livelihood.
Anthra strongly feels it is crucial to work with Dalits, from the entry point of livestock, so as to further strengthen their livelihood resource base.
