Sagari
R Ramdas trained as a veterinarian (1986) and has
a Masters in Animal Breeding and Genetics (1991),
from the University of California, Davis, USA. She
has worked with rural and adivasi communities as
a field veterinarian, trainer and researcher on livestock
and peoples livelihoods. Co-Director of ANTHRA, founded
with Nitya Ghotge in 1992, she has co-coordinated
research on the gender, caste and class dynamics
of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Livestock Production.
Currently, her work includes community action-research,
training and policy research on livestock production
in dryland agriculture. She has significant publications
on livestock production in the larger framework of
people's rights to food sovereignty.
Nitya
Sambamurti Ghotge trained as a veterinarian (1985)
and has a Masters in Veterinary Surgery(1989) from
the Bombay Veterinary College, India. She has been
working on issues of development and the environment
since 1986, and is also practicing clinical veterinary
medicine and surgery.
Co-director of ANTHRA, her current work includes
research, training and policy advocacy on different
aspects of livestock development including Indigenous
Knowledge Systems and planning for gender sensitive
and sustainable alternatives in livestock development.
She has significant publications on the themes of
livestock development, bio diversity and alternative
systems of veterinary medicine. She is the author
of the book "Livestock and Livelihoods: The
Indian Context " published by Center for Environment
Education, Ahmedabad and Foundation Books New Delhi.
Ms.
S. Ashalatha has a masters degree in Botany from
Osmania University, Hyderabad(1980). She has been
working with Anthra since 1996 and was closely associated
with the IKAH (Indigenous Knowledge in Animal Health)
project which started at that time. She is also responsible
for coordinating training programmes especially in
the southern states of India. Asha has contributed
to the Telugu publications of Anthra by translating
from English. She is deeply interested in the policy
research and advocacy work of the organisation. Presently
she coordinates the trainings and publications from
the Hyderabad office of Anthra
Mr.
M.L. Sanyasi Rao has a masters degree in Botany from
Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu. He is presently
doing a Ph.D. on Ethno-veterinary Remedies and Medicinal
Plants of Medak district from the Osmania University,
Hyderabad. He has been working with Anthra since
1996 and was closely involved with the research,
documentation and validation of IKAH (Indigenous
Knowledge in Animal Health). Sanyasi Rao (Sunny)
has contributed extensively to Anthra’s work
on medicinal plants and fodder varieties and continues
to guide field researchers, monitor research projects
and coordinate projects related to rural livelihoods,
biological diversity, herbal medicines, fodder development
and building of livestock assets. Currently he is
coordinates the community led action research projects
of Anthra in the state of Andhra Pradesh
Dr. Pallavi Kurundkar has an MVSc. degree from the
Veterinary College Parbhani with a specialization
in veterinary medicine. She joined Anthra in 2003
as a fresh graduate and helped extensively in validating
the herbal remedies researched by ANTHRA for livestock
as well as setting up community herbal gardens. Since
2005 she has been involved in anchoring training
programmes in different parts of the country and
has successfully helped many NGO’s train Animal
Health Workers especially in using validated herbal
remedies and making their own herbal medicines. She
has contributed to the publications of the organization
and helped organize seminars and workshops. Currently,
she operates out of Icchalkaranji in Kolhapur district
of Maharashtra and works closely with shepherd groups.
Dr. Sachin Hagawane has an MVSc. degree from the
Veterinary College Parbhani with a specialization
in veterinary medicine. He joined Anthra in 2007
to help coordinate the Support Pastoral Livelihoods
Programme in the state of Maharashtra. An experienced
field veterinarian, Sachin spends most of his time
with shepherds, helping them diagnose and treat their
animals, answering their queries on the mobile, advising
them on what fodder to grow and which animals to
purchase. Sachin has also been closely involved in
the documentation of the Deccani breed and the documentation
of the effects on livestock of ingesting Bt.cotton
seed cake and crop residue. He has been regularly
contributing articles in Marathi to Agro-one a rural
daily for farmers and has represented Anthra in different
seminars.
Dr.
Gayatri Rajurkar is a graduate from Parbhani Veterinary
College, MAFSU, Maharashtra and has completed her
M. V. Sc. in Veterinary Microbiology from Anand Agriculture
University in Gujarat in 2007. She has been associated
with ANTHRA since 2003. Joining initially as an
intern she has later been coordinator for different
training projects and small research studies. She
took a break of three years from ANTHRA to complete
her Masters and rejoined the team in December 2007.
She now helps with bringing out popular publications
in local languages, training of women’s groups
in livestock care, providing essential technical
support to different groups on issues related to
livestock health.
