• Livestock in Agroecology – The Critical Link

  The word “livestock” does not appear in the term agro-ecology , but they are a critical link in the agroecological cycle.
  In a vast country like India with varied systems of agricultural and livestock production, the livestock component is also closely linked to several migratory pastoralist communities. This is especially true where landholdings are small and farmers find it difficult to own and manage their own stock in sufficient numbers. On the other hand, several migratory pastoralist communities do not own land and depend on crop residue and stubble to feed their animals . This has resulted in distinct complementary systems between crop farmers , migratory pastoralists, the commons and forests .
  Unfortunately, these systems are not well appreciated by scientists and policy makers who have sought to standardize models based on text book recommendations and models of “economic efficiency”.
  As agriculture and livestock rearing face a fresh crisis with issues such as climate change it may be necessary to take a fresh look at these systems and see them for “what they are” rather than “what they are not” .
