    • Annual Deccani Sheep Judging Competition

    • Starting 23rd October 2009 the annual Deccani sheep competition hosted by ANTHRA will begin. Held at different locations every year this competition is an effort to regenerate interest in the Deccani breed which in the past few years has lost its prime position as the number one sheep breed of the Deccan. Ideally suited for the terrain and carefully selected and bred by generations of shepherds the Deccani has rapidly been replaced by breeds like the Madgyal and Red Nellore. Market forces and policy directives of the state Animal Husbandry Department have pushed the Deccani out. However, reaffirming the fact that shepherds know best about sheep, many shepherds in Kolhapur district have started breeding the Deccani again. The first competition is at Village Salpe, district Satara in Maharashtra on the 23rd of October followed by one on 27th October at Village Alankapuri, district Solapur. These will be followed by more competitions in other districts. May the best sheep win!
