- This year as organizers, the Shepherds sangham and Anthra decided on an innovative new format for the jatra, which was held through the month of March 2011: the objective this year was to deepen the knowledge base amongst the shepherds on the finer details and nuances of conserving and rearing the Deccani breed and Osmanabadi goats. 6 villages, which exemplify the amazing progress made over the years in conserving the breeds, were identified as centres for the Jatra (Ramachandrapuram, Nastipur, Sikindlapur, Chennapur, Gudemgadda and Saipet). Shepherds from neighbouring villages participated. The shepherds visited the flocks, observed the purity of the flock, shared their knowledge on the breed, identified animals that conformed to the breed characteristics, shared practices on how best to conserve the breed, problems and challenges they face, measures to improve wool, and other management practices. Data on the flocks and breed from each village was documented (as is usual practice each year), and analysed for breed purity, mortality and morbidity and the analysed information presented to the shepherds at the jatra. This information evoked animated discussions, with the community analyzing reasons for the variation between villages with respect to increase/ decrease in breed purity, diseases, wool shearing methods, grazing challenges and solutions.
