    • Pastoralists Meet

    • Pastoralists closely associated with Anthra participated in a 3 day meeting hoted by KRAPAVIS in Alwar, Rajasthan, India. Pastoralists from the Gujjar, Raika, Kurma, Gollas, Maldharis and Dhangar communities were present. The meeting was facilitated by Viren Lobo, Dr. A.K. Singh, Rishu Garg, Ashalatha, Tilottama Sarkar, Dr. Jagruti Sanghvi, and Aman Singh. The discussions primarily centred around the forest rights of the pastoralists. Communities with the help of the NGOs in different states are in the process of claiming community rights through the Forest Rights Act. and their experiences were shared Some common problems included the fact that grazing land has been shrinking, and in many cases access has been denied due to diversion of common and grazing lands for various purposes by the Government. Most groups felt traditional grazing lands used by the pastoralists are still out of bounds for pastoralists, despite the existence of the FRA and in many cases pastoralists felt they were being harrassed by forest guards A strong statement in favour of traditional breeds which are suited to the local environment was made and at the same time the governmental livestock policies and programmes promoting cross-breeding for local animals for higher milk yield and stall-feeding are were questioned.. The pastoralist communities discussed strategies of collective action. Some of the suggestions that came up were marking a day as ‘Pastoralists’ Day’, frequent meetings between groups to ensure solidarity. allowing women pastoralists to take the lead.
